The Livable Communities Project is an exciting 2.7 million dollar federal funded project in downtown Galveston, Texas. While the downtown is considered to be the center of a dynamic rebirth of the City of Galveston, its traditional role as the center of business and government is bolstered by an ever increasing level of tourist, special events, commercial, and residential activity. The 11-block Strand-Mechanic National Register Historic District is also home to numerous special events throughout the year, including Mardi Gras and Galveston Historic Foundations' "Dickens On The Strand".
Transportation has always been a key component of downtown Galveston and in 1988, the historic nature of downtown Galveston was reinvigorated by the return of historic rail trolley service. The citizens of Galveston have recognized the need for an improved quality of life between the neighborhoods, the tourist industry and the business owners in this historic area. The other distinctive areas of downtown include Market Street, the office and financial core of Galveston and the Postoffice Street Arts and Entertainment District, where museums, galleries, restaurants, bars and nightclubs co-exist.
The planned project is to give pedestrians a better plan for transportation linkages with improved access to public transportation by Island Transit, for those who visit Galveston recreation destinations and to connect people with jobs, the hospital facility, UTMB and education facilities within the community. The Livable Communities Initiative will provide a lively downtown area where streets are
designed for pedestrians as well as vehicles.
The Livable Communities Initiative project is being administered by The Goodman Corporation, a Houston based urban and transportation planning firm, that identified the necessary funding, and has assembled the project team of SLA Studio Land, an urban planning architectural firm, and J.W. Kelso and Company, who was recently selected as general contractor for Phase 1 of the project.
