What items are included within the scope of this project?
- Trolley Shelters Over the
years the locations to board the Galveston Island Rail Trolley
have lost visibility and accessibility. The LCI project is
relocating and improving three stops along The Strand.
Improvements at each stop will include a shelter designed to be
compatible with the historic district, lighting, information/map
signage, benches, trashcans, and distinctive pavement.
- Curbs Downtown Galveston has a
wide variety of curbs. Some are extremely high, others are made of
brick, and others have steps. The LCI project will restore curbs
that have been damaged. Each location will be treated to match its
historic appearance, size, and materials. Where there is no
damage, existing curbs will remain. Unused driveways will be
removed.
- Sidewalks Downtown Galveston
has a history of using varied paving materials at different
locations. Wood, stone, brick, and concrete are all traditional.
Where sidewalk repairs are necessary, bricks with an historic
appearance will be used. Varied colors and patterns will
complement individual historic buildings.
- Wheelchair Ramps Several of
the intersections have no ramps. The LCI project will add ramps
where needed to improve accessibility. Various designs reflect the
needs of each location and the variations in curb height.
- Street lighting To increase
the safety and security of the area, lighting will be improved.
The gaslight system will be completely restored. Existing lamps
and poles will be repaired, repainted, and brought to full
brightness. Missing units will be replaced and the theme will be
extended by installing new lights around the corners. At
intersections, decorative electric lights with an historic theme
will be installed in cooperation with CenterPoint Energy.
- Street Furniture Uniform
benches, trashcans, and bicycle racks will be installed.
- Wayfinding Signage The new
electric streetlight poles at the intersections will include
street name signs, historical district designation, and wayfinding
signs pointing to key destinations in the area.
- Historical Signage The
existing system of historical information signs will be
refurbished to preserve them and convey additional information
about the significance of The Strand
- Terminal A key component of
the Livable Communities Initiative is to develop a new, off-street
transit terminal for downtown Galveston. This facility will serve
as the hub for Island Transits services. All routes will converge
on the terminal simultaneously to facilitate transfers. Downtown
visitors will have a convenient location to board buses, obtain
information, and purchase tickets. Restrooms, tourist information,
and other facilities will be provided. Intercity bus carriers will
also serve the facility. The terminal is in the development stage.
