Welcome to the Galveston Livable Communities Galveston Web site.

If you visit downtown Galveston today, there is no doubt a major revitalization effort is taking place. Three major cruise ship lines now visit the Port of Galveston, a new hotel is scheduled to be built in the next 12 months, Piers 19 is undergoing extensive renovations to accommodate a Landry’s waterfront entertainment and restaurant area and a rail trolley extension project to UTMB from downtown is underway.
Over the past 3 years, the City of Galveston, through acquired Federal Transit Administration funding, has embarked on a major Livable Communities Imitative project of over $2.7 million. Through these funds, downtown Galveston will build new sidewalks and curbs, improve lighting, construct new trolley shelters, install benches, bike racks, trash receptacles, new way finding signage, and refurbish the existing gas lights along The Strand. In addition, a new transit facility is planned to be located somewhere in the LCI designated project area.

Phase 1 of the project is the area defined as 20th to 25th street along The Strand. Additional funds are being sought for later phases that will include Mechanic to Postoffice streets, from 20th to 25th street.
